This weekend I was at Book Expo America at the Javits Center in New York to launch my book. If you haven't been to a BEA, imagine the largest tradeshow you’ve ever been to with hundreds of publishers showing off thousands of new books to tens of thousands of booksellers with millions of pounds of books given away. So many free books are thrust into your hands that attendees fill multiple boxes in an "attendee shipping area" the size of half a football field with UPS shipping directly to people’s homes & businesses.
Many authors and celebrities with new books attend. A few people I ran across: Dave Barry, Dr. Ruth, Alan Alda, SE Hinton, Alan Greenspan, Valerie Palme Wilson, "Dog" the Bounty Hunter, Jeffrey Gitomer.
As part of The New Rules of Marketing & PR launch, I presented "The new rules of marketing and PR for independent booksellers: How to leverage Web marketing and promotions to sell more books." The room was on the small side, with 100 seats. But I was thrilled that we crammed 130 people in, with some sitting on the floor in front of the stage, some standing on the sides and even people in the hallway craning their necks to see in. It was a terrific way to push the book into the world. I really like this photo of the attendees holding up copies of my book!
Thanks go to Lori and PJ at my publisher, Wiley, for setting this all up.

It was great to spend time with you, especially at this exciting time! The feedback from your presentation has been great.
Have fun at the Vocus User Summit. Sorry I won't be there with you.

Dang ! I wish I'd been there to meet Dog !

Mike,
Dog looks exactly, (I mean EXACTLY) like he does on TV.
I saw him sitting at a table at his publisher's booth signing posters. At first I thought I was having an acid flashback or something because he was so out of context compared to the business-suit clad book sales reps from the publisher. It literally took my mind a few seconds to register what I was seeing!

Really enjoyed your session at BEA. You may like this post on a colleague's blog that deals really well with the important question of managing one's reputation online. It is a great lesson for everyone to understand, and a good follow on to my final question in the session (thanks for taking it!). He's done a podcast recently with Robert Scoble, too so maybe you know these guys already. Best to you.

David,
Great BEA presentation. But if you do it again, you're going to need a bigger boat.
