Ross Mayfield is a formidable blogger and a man that takes the destiny of technology into his own hands. Turns out, he takes his company Socialtext's marketing into his own hands too. The company recently scored a chunk of venture funding and instead of issuing a press release on it, Mayfield issued a blogging challenge: The first person to blog the details of the Series B Venture funding wins a package of five Socialtext.net seats for a year. I laud the innovative use of viral marketing and Mayfield's willingness to practice what he preaches, as well as to demonstrate his faith in the power of blogging. But as a journalist... it would be nice to see a tidy little press release issued now that Juri took the prize. In fact, I'd suggest the company work its blog-marketing strategy into a press release.
